For the conference to discuss my internship plan, I
prepared a packet for Mr. Hooker that included the site supervisor agreements,
the self-assessment completed in this first course, the general
responsibilities for a site supervisor letter, a copy of the graduate survey,
and a copy of my internship plan.
During our meeting, Mr. Hooker and I discussed all of
these items along with my internship plan and the requirements of the courses I
will be taking over the next months.
Mr. Hooker was very impressed with the variety of experiences
represented in my plan. Having been a
superintendent in several other districts in Indiana, he made a point to stress
the importance of such a background. The
superintendent has a great deal of responsibility and must be able to adapt,
often quite rapidly. He felt the plan
gave me the opportunity to build my background and gain insight into the
various responsibilities of the superintendency.
Mr. Hooker suggested I take over a public relations
campaign he was instituting. It was an
easy substitution for the activity I planned for item 25 in my internship plan. The change means I now am in the process of
planning a public relations campaign and implementation strategies for a booth
for Seymour Community Schools at the Jackson County Fair.
In summary, I would highlight Mr. Hooker’s support for my
work and his confidence my pursuit of this certification. As I am working through my internship plan,
Mr. Hooker is taking the time to provide me with a behind the scenes look at
the life of a superintendent. As busy as
he is, he takes time to explain the rationale behind his decisions and he
shares insight into his plans for our school district. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity
to learn about the superintendency from a seasoned professional.
